The short version
PromptVault stores everything — your prompts, snippets, and bookmarks — exclusively on your own device using your browser's local storage. We have no servers, no accounts, no analytics, and no way to see your data. We collect absolutely nothing.
1. Who We Are
PromptVault is a free Chrome browser extension that helps you save, organize, and reuse AI prompts and chat snippets. It is offered at no cost with no account required.
2. Data We Store — And Where
All data created or saved through PromptVault is stored exclusively in your browser's chrome.storage.local — a sandboxed storage area on your own device. This data never leaves your device and is never transmitted anywhere.
The following types of data may be stored locally:
- Prompts — titles, body text, tags, and timestamps that you create manually.
- Snippets — text you select and save from AI chat pages, along with the page URL, page title, and domain name.
- Bookmarks — URLs, page titles, domain names, and the timestamps of when you saved or last visited them.
- Groups — folder names you create to organize your prompts and snippets.
- Variable history — the last values you entered for template variables in your prompts, to save you re-typing them.
- Recents — a short list (max 8) of the most recently used prompt or snippet IDs.
- UI preferences — e.g., which corner you last positioned the floating button in.
None of this data is associated with an identity, account, email address, or any personally identifying information. It is simply content you choose to save, stored locally like a notes app.
3. Data We Do Not Collect
We do not collect, transmit, or process any of the following:
- Personal information of any kind (name, email, IP address, device ID)
- Browsing history or page content beyond what you explicitly save
- Analytics, usage statistics, or telemetry
- Crash reports or error logs
- Keystrokes or input monitoring
- The contents of your AI conversations beyond snippets you manually save
There are no third-party analytics libraries, no advertising SDKs, and no tracking pixels included in PromptVault.
4. Permissions and Why We Need Them
PromptVault requests the following browser permissions:
- storage — to save your prompts, snippets, bookmarks, and groups locally on your device.
- activeTab — to read the URL and title of the current tab when you bookmark a page.
- tabs — to open bookmarks in new tabs and to send paste instructions to the active AI chat tab.
- scripting — to inject the content script that displays the save toolbar and paste button on AI chat pages.
- sidePanel — to display the PromptVault panel alongside your browser window.
- Host permissions (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity) — to run the content script exclusively on supported AI platforms, enabling the save toolbar and direct paste feature. The extension does not run on any other websites.
5. Content Script Behavior
On supported AI chat platforms, PromptVault injects a lightweight content script that does the following:
- Displays a floating button to open the side panel.
- Shows a small toolbar when you select 15 or more characters of text, letting you save the selection as a prompt or snippet.
- When saving a snippet, reads the selected text, the page URL, the page title, and — if on an AI chat platform — structures the visible conversation messages to provide context. This data is saved locally only and is never transmitted.
- Receives paste instructions from the side panel and inserts your chosen prompt into the chat input field.
The content script does not run in the background, does not monitor your typing, and does not read page content unless you explicitly trigger a save action.
6. Data Sharing
We do not share your data with anyone — because we never have access to it. All data lives on your device. There are no third parties, advertisers, or partners involved.
7. Data Retention and Deletion
Your data persists in chrome.storage.local until you delete it manually within the extension, or until you uninstall PromptVault. Uninstalling the extension removes all locally stored data.
PromptVault also provides built-in export tools (JSON, Markdown, CSV) so you can back up or migrate your data at any time.
8. Children's Privacy
PromptVault does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children under the age of 13. Since no data is collected at all, there is no special handling required.
9. Changes to This Policy
If we ever change how PromptVault handles data, we will update this page and revise the "last updated" date at the top. Material changes will be noted in the Chrome Web Store listing.
